One of Firenze’s best to eat like a local. With excellent service and authentic cuisine, what more can you ask for?

Italy is an amazing place.  Cities like Venice, Milan and Rome are filled with great experiences and exceptional fare, but the one city that stands out is the beautiful Firenze. As a tourist,  finding great eateries can become quite confusing, but the one rule of thumb is to avoid the tourist traps at all costs and eat where the locals do. One restaurant that draws in many native Italians, is a great little place called Ristorante La Grotta Guelfa.

Located on Via Pellicceria near Piazza della Signoria, which is in the heart of the city, La Grotta Guelfa was built on the ancient palace of the Captains of the Guelph. The restaurant interior has an authentic medieval feel to it with exposed brick, wood paneling and beautiful paintings displayed throughout. The outdoor area is roomy and large allowing you to sit in a variety of different areas depending on preference. The staff is very accommodating and thorough and if you’re lucky you might even get an Italian lesson or two. The food was excellent. Le tagliatelle ai frutti do mare (seafood tagliolini) and Le tagliatelle al salmon (tagliatelle with salmon) are just two of the great choices here, but the Il petto di pollo alla mozzarella (chicken breast with cheese) is tender, juicy, super cheesy and utterly delicious. The roast potatoes are to die for; crisp and cooked perfectly they are the perfect complimentary side dish. The desert choices are all winners. The Tiramisu had that real genuine delicious taste to it while the Cheesecake is unique in the taste and texture setting it apart from the American version that we’re normally accustomed to.

La Grotta Guelfa is as Italian as you can get. Excellent food, great atmosphere, wonderful staff and bottles of wine to your heart’s satisfaction. When you eat like this for a few days, your level of respect for a great meal raises so much that the food back home just doesn’t compare. Well done La Grotta Guelfa, well done.
