EDITOR’S RATING
Great tasting Cuban food without all of the bells and whistles.
In Miami, Cuban cuisine is as synonymous to the city as its Art Deco buildings and beautiful beach. One of the oldest restaurants that captures the essence of South Beach is the landmark Puerto Sagua. Opened since 1962, Puerto Sagua has been a staple in the city, serving up authentic, no-nonsense Cuban dishes to locals and tourists alike. There’s a reason why the place is always packed and it’s because the food is simply that good. On the outside is a façade that gives off the typical diner look. The exterior has a light peach color with a black awning and Puerto Sagua Restaurant in neon letters. The inside is very basic; there’s a sit-down counter by the entrance when you walk in which is great if you want to place a to-go order or just grab a quick meal. To the right is the main dining area. The tables inside are decorated with various images of aquatic life as the old school paintings on the walls bring out the aged wood accents all around. No, it’s not the best décor in the world, but it still manages to show off a bit of charisma nonetheless. Breakfast here is the real deal. Yes, you can go for the two-egg platter option, but the ham, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on Cuban bread is a damn good choice. The Cuban bread is crisp and toasty, the ham was flavorful yet not too salty and the eggs were scrambled just right and not too hard. It also a pretty generous sized portion that won’t have you feeling overly full either. Lunch here is phenomenal as well with their Cuban Sandwich being truly authentic. Each bite has total consistency. You can taste a crunchy pickle in each mouthful which fully compliments the juicy roast pork and cheese. I must say that this Cuban is made very, very well.
Are their better Cuban restaurants in Miami? Probably, but for the price, service and convenient location it just can’t be beat. So, the next time visit good, old, Magic City be sure to take a stroll over to Collins and 7th and experience the goodness of Puerto Sagua first hand.
