Fruity with a high alcohol content, The Reserva is a bit too powerful for our liking, but might taste better paired with some really good barbecue.
Welcome to our wine tasting series For the Love of Malbec. Malbec is a major favorite of ours here at The Urban Aristocrat and with so many options to choose from, our goal is to uncover the absolute best selections and share our experiences with you. So, grab yourself a clean wine glass and join us on this adventure through wines.
The introductory bottle in our series is a 2010 Reserva Malbec from Argentina’s Gauchezco Vineyard and Winery. Gauchezco describes it as deep red laced with violet overlays. An elegant and complex style where notes of plum, raspberry, violets, and vanilla invade the nose. The wine is balanced and concentrated with well-rounded tannins which emphasize its personality. A long and smooth finish.
Upon the first sip, we were taken aback by how strong it was. The Reserva’s hints of fruit are easily detectable, with a slight smoky undertone, high acidity (amount unknown) and alcohol content of 14 percent. There was no ease or assimilation to the taste as we progressed through the glass, and my mouth actually felt very dry after a few sips. Although I was able to get through my first pour, I had no interest in continuing on with the rest of the bottle. We did not pair this bottle with food, but Gauchezco recommends the Reserva as being the perfect option with barbecue.
It’s worth a try if you’re a lover of all things Malbec and there is a possibility that the taste is enhanced if it is accompanied by some phenomenal pulled pork, but we weren’t too thrilled by this selection at all.
